Dear Coalition,

Our film event with Friends Peace Teams and Toward Right Relationship with Native Peoples was a huge success. We thank them for sponsoring us. If you would like to schedule a Film Showing and Q & A event please contact us at pacnacuer2020@gmail.com.

DID YOU KNOW?

The story behind this landmark and what these four men had to say about Indigenous Peoples? Thanks to a member of our film audience, we have

this information worth sharing.

Background: Very simply the story is that Mt. Rushmore is located on lands that are sacred to the Lakota Peoples. In the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie the US Government set aside those lands for the Lakota peoples to retain for themselves.

But in 1874, gold was discovered in the area and there was an influx of prospectors and settlers ignoring and breaking the treaty. In 1877, Congress passed an act that forced Indians onto reservations and gave the US government ownership of the Black Hills, including Six Grandfathers Mountain by Indigenous Peoples, which was later renamed Mount Rushmore.
