Greetings!
As we, the Coalition of Natives and Allies, are meeting each week via Zoom, we are building evidence and support for the legislation which would protect Native peoples from harmful stereotypical sports mascotry. With the proper guidance, we plan to propose said legislation hopefully as soon as the autumn of 2020.
Modeled after Maine's Law LD944, we are going to propose AN ACT TO BAN NATIVE AMERICAN MASCOTS IN ALL PENNSYLVANIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
We are gathering letters and statements of support by contacting the individuals and organizations listed below. This list will continue to grow.
NARF (Native American Rights Fund)
Penobscot Ambassador Maulian Dana, Penobscot Nation, Maine
Secretary of Department of Education, State of Pennsylvania
Representative Tina Davis, District 141 State of Pennsylvania
Senator Robert Casey, US Senate
ACLU PA
NAACP Bucks County, PA
Governor Tom Wolf, State of Pennsylvania
PA citizens and students
Lenape Nations in diaspora
Clergy, Parents and Students
(please feel to add suggestions of other individuals and organizations
that might consider a letter of support)
SEEKING YOUR GUIDANCE
AS WE MOVE FORWARD with this goal, we are seeking guidance from an attorney willing to assist us in bringing this law into state legislative committee and ultimately to the State Legislature. We are asking for pro bono help in resolving this human rights issue.
If you or someone you know is willing to volunteer their services, we would greatly appreciate your response to this newsletter.
As this pandemic has unmasked so many inequities, it's time to
"Change the Name" (mascots)
“When you see people as people you treat them like people.”
We acknowledge that we live and work on Lenape Tribal territory known as Lenapehoking
